The Thunderbird was released in 1955 as Ford's 'personal car'. It was not a direct competitor to the Corvette but with their similarity's it was very hard not to compare the 2. The Thunderbirds first model year was 1955 and outsold the Corvette by a substantial margin, like 23:1. Ford considered it a personal luxury car more than a sports car.
