By 1951 the 88 was the entry level model in the Oldsmobile line up. This was the first year all Oldsmobile's came exclusively with the Rocket V-8. The rocket engine was an all-new design that pumped out 135hp. Quite an accomplishment when you consider the ever-popular Ford Flathead V-8 was putting out 35 less horsepower. The 1951-52 Rocket 88 was an instant hit with its sleek design. It didn't hurt that the 88 Rocket was also crowned 'King of Nascar'.
