The 1978 Indy 500 Pace Car marked the first time a Corvette was chosen as the pace car for the Indy 500, and happened to be the 25th anniversary of the Corvette. This extremely well-cared for Corvette was purchased by its second owner in 1981 and has remained in the family since then. Powered by its original (numbers-matching) L82 350 CID small block engine, backed by its original TH350 3-speed automatic, this car's odometer is showing what the owner states to be 9258 original miles. The L82 was the performance-oriented choice over the L48 option, and in 1978 was putting out 220HP (vs 185HP for the L48). Only 6,502 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car edition Corvettes were built, ensuring that they will continue to become harder to find as time goes on and more of them go by the wayside.
The Pace Car edition's special black over silver paint scheme is highlighted by a red pin stripe just below the separation line between the black upper and silver lower and mimics the red accent line at the outer edges of each of the special slotted aluminum wheels.
