For sale at Gateway Classic Cars in our St. Louis showroom is "The King of the Hill" as it was called when released in 1990, the Corvette ZR-1. The first ZR1 was actually in 1970 and ran until 1972. In 1990, it made a return and in a big way. Powered by a 375 horsepower LT-5. A dual overhead cam four valve per cylinder V8 engine designed by Lotus and assembled by Mercury Marine. This was a first for the Corvette as opposed to the pushrod V8 that is still being used in today's Corvettes. Sitting behind the engine is a 6 speed manual transmission allowing you to achieve up to 25 miles per gallon, a top speed of 180 mph and a 0-60 time in 4.3! It also featured a rear end that was widened by 3 inches to house the extra wide 315/35ZR17 rear tires. The car also featured square tail lights that wouldn’t make their way onto the standard Corvette for another year.
In 1990 Corvette decided to take a stab at a 50 year old 24 hour speed record. John Heinricy pitched the idea to Corvette chief engineer Dave McLellan. A 7.71-mile oval, Bridgestone Tire Proving Ground at Fort Stockton, Texas was chosen by Morrison because of its gentle 7-degree banking. The Corvette beat the record and still holds the record today. 175 mph average speed for 24 hours! Afterwards, just for grins, they decided to try two hot laps at full-throttle – 15-miles at 190-plus mph, after running for 5000 miles! Truly incredible!
