The Continental served as Lincoln's flagship car during its first three generations, 1939 to 1960. It even had its own division, known as the Continental division, however it was short lived and only lasted from 1956 to 1957. In 1961 Lincoln transformed its 3 model line down to one, you guessed it, the Continental. For the next sixteen years the Continental was the sole sedan produced by Lincoln. The Town Car name first appeared on a custom built Lincoln built for Henry Ford in 1922. It resurfaced in 1959 on a Limousine style version of the Lincoln Continental Mark IV, only available in black of course. Ten years later it showed up again as an interior package option for the Continental. For the next ten years the Town Car was the top of the line of the Continental model. In the early 80's the Town Car took over the full-size car line for Lincoln and the Continental dropped down to a mid-size car to jump into the fuel efficient fight of the day.
