For sale at Gateway Classic Cars in our St. Louis showroom is a 1977 Chevrolet Corvette. This isn't your typical Corvette though, this one has been treated to a twin turbo kit from Gale Banks Engineering. Originally this L-82 Corvette produced only 210 horsepower. Now thanks to Gale Banks Engineering, it is now producing 520 horsepower! According to Banks, this will propel the Corvette down the quarter mile in under 12 seconds at 125 mph. Aside from the alcohol cooled twin turbos, the engine also received mild porting to the heads and polished combustion chambers, roller rockers, high flow fuel pump, HEI ignition, a modified Edelbrock Torker intake manifold with a modified Holley 800 double pumper, hand built exhaust manifolds and Banks forged 110-inch reverse deflector, 8.5:1 pistons. Clearly this was not an easy bolt on application. Banks also used their own turbo grind Hydraulic camshaft for excellent throttle response with mid-range/top end power. Engine specs are courtesy of Super Chevy, June 1982. Accepting the power and sending it to the rear wheels is a beefy Turbo 400 automatic transmission with a 2600 rpm stall speed converter. Since the build in the early 80's the car has been well cared for spending most of its life in a climate controlled facility. In 2013 Morley Performance rebuilt the turbos and the carburetor. They also ran braided stainless steel fuel lines and replaced all three fuel pumps in addition to a general check up. Before the car's arrival at our showroom, it was tuned up and is now ready to impress. Since new the car has covered only 11,500 miles and it certainly feels that way when behind the wheel. The rest of the car is normal 1977 Corvette. Inside is a Smoked Gray leather interior that appears to be stock with exception to a couple of extra gauges and a boost controller. Power windows, tilt/ telescopic steering wheel, AM/FM radio and of course pop out T-Tops. Black over Smoked Gray with a set of aluminum Corvette wheels will fool most who dare to challenge.
