It had been over a decade since the Ford Mustang was chosen to pace the Indianapolis 500 and in 1979, Ford debuted this special car to take on that exclusive duty. Formula 1 Champion Jackie Stewart piloted the pace car for the start of the 500, while 1960 Indy 500 Champ Jim Rathmann took over during caution periods throughout the race. To commemorate the race and Ford’s involvement, 10,479 pace cars were built at the Dearborn and San Jose Assembly plants. This beautiful survivor car was produced on April 18, 1979 in Dearborn and still wears its sharp pewter paint with bold stripes in Red and Vista Orange as well as flat black hood with “MUSTANG†lettering. This three-owner car boasts just over 29,500 actual miles on the numbers matching 302 CID V8 engine that is linked to a four-speed manual overdrive transmission! Take note of the sporty rear louvers as well as the front spoiler housed Marchal® fog lights. The 1979 Pace Car was the only Mustang to have fog lights which required a unique wiring harness marked “Pace Car†for the front of the car. Open the door and be greeted by a well-kept interior with Recaro® racing seats as well as seatbelts with “Firestone†under the buckles and “Indy Replica†on the front belt tags. Look up at the pop-out sun roof that has the rare plastic inner louver panel and get ready to take this beauty out for a cruise! This survivor Mustang Pace Car includes an official Marti Report as well as a Limited-Edition Pace Car Decantur and tray!
