Gateway Classic Cars Houston Showroom is excited to present this very rare, and well-documented 1995 Ford Mustang Cobra R. For those of you who may not know much about these unique cars, the Ford Mustang Cobra Rs were some of the rarest and most purpose-built Mustangs ever made by Ford. They were built for only three model years (1993, 1995, and 2000), with the final ones being the only Cobras built in 2000. All the Cobra R models were built to be raced; so, most of the standard creature comforts that were found in Mustangs were deleted to save weight. The 1993 Cobra R marked Ford's introduction of the "R" model: only 107 were produced and all were painted in Vibrant Red Clearcoat. 1993 was also the final year for the Fox-Body Mustang; so, Ford created this no-compromises halo version to send the Fox off (to the track) in style. The result was a bare-bones Mustang designed, and intended, for serious track use. It came with roll-up windows, no speakers or radio, no air conditioning, or any power options other than power steering. The seats were the lightweight, non-power seats from the basic Mustang LX model (after all, Ford expected that the seats would be replaced with a racing seat when configured for track use). The body was stiffened with a strut tower brace, and a pair of V-braces (normally found only on the convertible) to tie the sub frames together for tighter handling. Two years later, in part due to the unexpected success of the 1993 Cobra R, SVT engineers developed another Cobra R, based on the 1995 SVT Cobra. Whereas the "regular" SVT Cobras were powered by a 5.0 Liter V-8 producing 240 horsepower, the Cobra R model was given the 5.8L Windsor V-8, which put out 25% more power than the 5.0L (300HP). The Cobra R also received a strut tower brace, thicker front and rear sway bars, heavier duty progressive rate coil springs (700-850 lbs./in. front, 200-260 lbs./in. rear), a 22-gallon fuel cell, a larger two-row radiator, an engine oil cooler, and a power steering cooler. In addition, the fog lights (found on other Cobras) were removed to allow Ford to run ductwork from behind those openings to funnel air to the front brakes for better brake cooling. Also, because the 5.8L V8's output was determined to present a potential reliability problem for the T-5 manual that came standard in "lesser Mustangs", Ford chose the heavier-duty Tremec 3550 to handle gear changes for the Cobra R. Once more, since this was a purpose-built race car, standard factory amenities like air conditioning, power windows, radio, and back seat were deleted in the interest of saving weight for the track. The 1995 Cobra Rs were limited to 250 vehicles, and again, a single color was chosen: this time it was Crystal White. Externally, compared to regular Cobras, the Cobra R models also received a unique "double cowl" fiberglass hood (to clear the taller 5.8L V8), along with unique 5-spoke wheels, featuring center caps with a silver snake wrapped around a bright red "R" logo. Finally, in an effort to prevent a recurrence of what happened with the 1993 Cobra R units (Ford learned that most of those cars ended up in the hands of collectors, with scant few ever actually raced), Ford added the provision to the purchase requirements for the 1995 Cobra R, such that they could only be purchased by an individual who held a valid competition license or owned a race team. This is your opportunity to put a real factory race car in your collection - be one of only 250 who can say that! Give our Houston showroom a call or send us an email, and we'll help you put this in your collection!
