1968 Ford Mustang GT for sale in our Houston Showroom. Not only is this a rarity in its own right by being a GT, but it is rarer yet because the 5th digit in the VIN is an R. That’s right! This is the famous “R” Code 428 Cobra Jet Mustang GT. 1968 was the first year for the 428 engine offering in a Mustang, and it was only offered in the last half of the year. The shock towers were modified to fit this monster engine along with beefed up suspension with staggered rear shocks to put the power to the ground. Let’s get to the drivetrain of this powerful pony! The 428 was conservatively rated at 335 horsepower for insurance purposes, but independent testing has shown true output to be around 410 - 450 horsepower! Behind that is the legendary Toploader 4 speed manual transmission, and the factory Ford 9” with 3.50:1 posi gears. The engine is fed through a hood scoop with a functional butterfly on the air cleaner giving this car a ram air effect into the 735 CFM Holley 4 barrel carburetor. So, how rare is this Mustang? Well, as the Elite Marti Report breaks it down, it is a 1 of 1 car. There were only 1,044 of the R code Mustangs built in 1968. Only 706 had the 4 speed manual, which let’s be honest, you have to have in a muscle car! Just 13 of them were this color, and of those only 5 had this color interior. This is the only one of those with the 3.50:1 posi rear end! This is the only one ever built with those options. It doesn’t get any more rare than that. The Presidential Blue paint is simply breathtaking! It goes from a deep rich blue, to a hint of green in direct sunlight, and almost looks Raven Black when a cloud passes by! The white C stripe and styled steel wheels with GT center caps, wrapped in correct Goodyear bias ply tires really give this car a factory original look! The black stripe running the hood is correct, as is the vast majority of this car. It is a great collector piece that would make any Mustang or muscle car collector proud to show it off. She had a full rotisserie restoration which was finished in Oklahoma in February of 2013. For those who think a Mustang isn’t a muscle car, how does 11.5 seconds at 120 miles per hour in the quarter mile sound? That is what these Mustangs were doing in 1968 when it destroyed the competition at the NHRA Winter Nationals. Adorned with the GT package, these cars not only had horsepower to spare, they had looks to kill. Fog lights, hood scoop, C stripe, GT center caps, GT gas cap, and GT badges really make this Sportsroof a head turner. This Mustang was built in Dearborn and originally sold at Muldon Motors in Pensacola Florida!
