For sale in our Detroit showroom is a beautiful and unique 1973 Ford Mustang. This is no ordinary Mustang either, as it is the rare “T5” edition. First gaining popularity midway through 1964, the Ford Mustang had many fans and enthusiasts wanting America’s new pony car. Even after a few redesigns differing from the original model, car collectors all over the world still wanted the latest and greatest car to call their own. While overseas customers ensured plenty of demand for such a car, the issue of rising gas prices and availability of parts made it harder for collectors to have such a car. A lot of these T5 Mustangs were originally purchased by American military staff stationed in Germany, who had the luxury of buying fuel at a discounted rate at on-base stations, and upon the end of their service, the car could be shipped back home at Uncle Sam’s expense. The name T5 originated from a situation with conflicting names, as a German truck manufacturer in the 50’s, Krupp, produced a vehicle they called the Mustang. Rather than paying the money to buy the Mustang name from Krupp, Ford solved the marketing situation by calling their car the T5, which was the original name for the Mustang project in the early sixties. According to the Ford T5 registry, there were roughly 500 T5’s produced in 1973, with fewer being hardtops like this one. This car comes documented with the Marti Report, which lists that this car was one of only 266 ordered with this DSO code, which included the options that set this car apart, with the T-5 badges, accessory packaging, and export label. Other options listed on the Marti Report include the 90 DS0 code, which translates to ‘Export Ordering District.’ One of the most noticeable parts of the car is the medium aqua paint, which is the original color of the car, and looks great, having been repainted in 2006. Under the hood is a 302 cubic-inch V8, backed by a C4 “Cruise-O-Matic” automatic transmission. With power steering, and even power front disc brakes, this old Ford will stop on a dime! Options on the car include: AM radio, power steering, power brakes, seat belts, vinyl interior, and raised white letter tires on rally wheels.
