Gateway Classic Cars of Charlotte is proud to digitally present this 1972 Plymouth Duster.
Plymouth product planners were given $15 million to freshen up the dowdy little Valiant for 1970. Nobody told them they could spend the money to create a slick, new fastback coupe. Then again, nobody said they couldn't. And so begins the story of the Plymouth Duster. The Duster shared the Valiant's front sheet metal and drivetrain, but from the mid-section to the rear, it had its own individual styling. It was a runaway success for Plymouth, selling over 1,328,377 by the time it was discontinued at the end of the 1976 model year. The Duster was always known as a "dual personality" car because it could be equipped with a meek six-cylinder engine or have a fire-breathing, high-winding small-block V8.
This mean Sublime Green machine is one hot car. It all starts (pun intended) with a push of a button mounted in the dash. As soon as that 340 Cubic inch Mopar V8 engine lights up, you know you are sitting in something special. The engine has been rebuilt and blueprinted, and the Mopar steel crank and performance connecting rods have all been balanced for ultimate, high-revving performance. A Holley Sniper Fuel injection system provides fuel to this beast through a Weiand aluminum intake manifold bolted to Edelbrock aluminum heads. The MSD ignition system lights the fire. Ceramic Hooker Headers direct all that noise through the 2.5" Pypes Turbo exhaust and sound awesome. The manual, five-speed Tremec TKX transmission is new along with the Mcleod hydraulic clutch and connects the driver to this car as only a manual can. The 8-3/4" rear houses a new Sure Grip Power-Lock unit and has a 3.23:1 gear ratio spinning Quick Performance axles and Custom American Racing wheels. Handling and braking have undergone massive updates with Wilwood disc brakes on all corners, Borgeson quick ratio power steering, tubular upper control arms, and Hotchkiss subframe connectors. The black vinyl interior looks and feels great. Custom gauges tell you how everything feels under the fiberglass hood and fenders. This is one nasty little Mopar.
