1968 Was a great year for Ford and Carrol Shelby. They had been teamed up since the conception of the Mustang in 1964. The newer mustangs would be a little larger which meant Carrol would have to pack on some more power. The GT350 would be his no non sense car while the luxurious GT500 would be the pony car that had the luxury and performance compared to the performance above all else GT350. 68 would also be the first year that the A. O Smith company would begin doing the conversions and only for 9 months. Shelby America had not been up to par on there quality control; measures so Ford decided to see the A. Feeling pressure from their competition, Ford needed to make the Mustang more powerful so it could keep up with its competitors. The answer came in the form of a larger car. The increased body size allowed Ford to put their first big-block engine in a Mustang. This optional 390-cubic-inch 6. 4L V-8 motor was capable of producing an impressive 320 hp. As such, Ford was clearly able to keep up with the big dogs on the road. This particular 1967 Mustang in 1980 by the current owner. For a few after the purchase this jewel was campaigned at the local dragstrip, where the original 390 V8 met its demise. The Mustang continue to race for a bit longer with a replacement 428 V8.
