Introduced with the C5 was GM's new LS1 small block. This third-generation small block V8 was completely redesigned. Now all-aluminum, it featured a distributor-less ignition and a new cylinder firing order. It was initially rated at 345 bhp and 350 lb-ft. The new engine, combined with the new body, was able to achieve up to 28 mpg on the highway. The 1979 Corvette has never been known for its performance as with all cars made in the late 70-s. Even the top of the line L 82 small block was only putting out 225 HP. It was no surprise when the 95 Corvette was announced as the official vehicle for that year-s INDY 500.
