The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), better known as the Humvee, was a series of lightweight military trucks and utility vehicles. When the army opened a contract to create an updated generation of multipurpose utility vehicles, Chrysler Defense and Teledyne Continental both produced a design, but AM General won the contract with the HMMWV. These military vehicles were built in a wide array of body styles and specifications depending on their intended task, and were available with a range of V8 engines, yet all were built with a 4x4 drivetrain.
