Gateway Classic Cars of Dallas is pleased to offer for sale this 2001 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 in Black. With only 47,860 miles, this 6-speed T56 car is built to impress. This car has tens of thousands invested into it to make it a powerful and capable high-performance street machine. Most of the modifications were done by Virginia Speed, a well-known speed shop in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and when purchased by the current owner in late 2020, put another $12,000 into it to finish out the build as it stands now.
The entire driveline has been hugely upgraded. It now has a completely built LS2 6.0 liter engine that puts out 502 rear wheel horsepower (590 horsepower to the flywheel) and 448 ft-lbs rear wheel torque (528 ft-lbs to the flywheel) The engine work (and all original driveline work) was done by Virginia Speed and they also chassis-dyno tuned it using a speed density tune. The tune was improved by adding a Mass Airflow sensor and took the car to LG Motorsports in Anna, Texas to retune with their HP Tuners software using the MAF sensor input, increasing driveability.
The engine build features several impressive components. It begins with a GM-sourced remanufactured LS2 long block, known for its performance capabilities. To optimize airflow, Trick Flow 225cc aluminum cylinder heads are used, along with ARP head studs for secure clamping. The Virginia Beach custom hydraulic roller camshaft, known as "Mario's personal grind," is tailored for enhanced performance. Harland Sharp billet aluminum 1.7/1 ratio roller rocker arms and Comp Cams Chromoly Magnum 5/16" pushrods work together to transfer motion effectively. Fuel delivery is improved with a FAST LSXR 102 mm composite intake manifold, FAST red anodized fuel injector rails, a Nick Williams 102 mm throttle body, and RC Engineering 42 lb fuel injectors. The engine is balanced and optimized with an ATI Super Damper. To support air intake, an SLP Ram Air setup is included. The exhaust system comprises Kooks 1-7/8 inch stainless steel headers with catalytic converters and full emissions support. Completing the look and performance, a complete Kooks 3-inch stainless steel dual exhaust system with custom black carbon fiber Akrapovic dual exhaust tips is added. This setup complements the overall black-with-red trim aesthetic.
This is a great engine combination for the street. It makes big overall horsepower and torque but with the cam that was chosen it also has great midrange torque so the engine never bogs, you can step on it as low as 2000 rpm and it just pulls hard seemingly at any rpm.
The transmission was taken to the pros at Texas Drivetrain Performance out of Hurst, Texas and they completely went through it and rebuilt and upgraded it to their Stage 2 specification. it is now stronger and shifts like a dream through the Hinson Motorsports short shifter. The clutch and pressure plate is a Mcleod RSX twin disk setup capable of handling up to 1000 horsepower but has great street manners and stock-like pedal effort. The clutch slave cylinder is an adjustable unit from Tick Performance.
The rear end is a Strange Engineering S60 unit (this is Strange Engineering's upgraded and improved version of a Dana 60 rear end), with 3.50 gears and 35 spline axles with a Trac-lock differential, and is outfitted with " wheel studs. This is a hugely strong rear end for the street (it's easily strong enough for the dragstrip) but runs and drives quietly and smoothly on the street.
The suspension has been completely redone (again by Virginia Speed) with BMR Performance upgrades (in red powder coat) which include: Bolt-on Subframe connectors, Weld-on control arm relocation brackets, Adjustable lower control arms, Adjustable Torque Arm, 1/1/4" lowering springs, Koni 6 way adjustable shock absorbers, Adjustable Panhard bar, Also installed is a fully functional Hurst Line-Lock setup.
In addition to the driveline and suspension upgrades, The owner decided to do a major upgrade to the stock antilock power disk brakes. The car came with stock calipers and upgraded drilled and slotted 12" rotors, but I decided to go all-in and upgraded further to a Baer brakes setup with 13" rotors front and rear with aluminum hats and 6 piston calipers at the front and 4 piston calipers at the rear, again all powder coated in red. The rear brakes include an internal drum-style adjustable parking brake.
The wheels were upgraded with custom Corvette C6 Z06 cast aluminum black powder-coated wheels with machined-in grooves in red powder coat around the circumference of the wheels. They look like the car has redline tires but the redlines are in the wheels not the tires. They go really well with the red calipers against the overall black color of the car. The wheels are 17 x 9.5 inches at the front and 18 x 10.5 inches at the rear. Front tires are BF Goodrich Comp 2 A/S in 275/40 ZR17 size and rear tires are Nitto NT555R2 drag radials in 305/35 R18 size. The tires are all like new (including the drag radials) as only about 2400 miles on the car since replacing all the tires and they have not been abused.
Thoroughbred Window Tinting out of Sherman, Texas redo all the tinting with a Texas maximum 33ramic window film. The ceramic film is worth the extra money as it reflects a lot of heat that will get passed through into the car with lower-cost window tint films.
The original black leather interior is in great condition with leather power seats for both the driver and passenger. The original instrumentation and gauges work and Virginia Speed added Autometer Air/Fuel Ratio, Water Temperature, and Oil temperature digital gauges in a pod mounted to the driver's A-pillar.
The Sound System was upgraded a Kenwood Excelon KDC-898 head unit with CD/AM/FM/SiriusXM/Pandora/HDRadio/Aha/iHeart radio capability that also has Bluetooth for hands-free calling and wireless connectivity to your cellphone and also USB connectivity to any of your devices. He installed Italian Hertz component speakers both front and rear and a JL Audio JX 400/4D four-channel amplifier (70 Watts/channel at 4 ohms).
