Make a date with the Rocket 88! That was Oldsmobile’s promotional tag in 1955 and still holds true for this stunning, numbers matching original 1955 Oldsmobile Super 88 for sale in our Milwaukee Showroom. The beautiful oval air intake grill with horizontal crossbar and twin “bumper bombs” set the style for this Oldsmobile Super 88. The two-tone “Flying Color” scheme of Mint over Grove Green with elongated S-curve snaking down the sides pull you right in with a smile. This look was all new in 1955 with styling carried over from the Starfire Concept car. It was also the first year for a one piece wrap around windshield. The wide-white wall tires and acres of chrome just add to the styling and beauty of this car but that is just the beginning. With the mighty 324 cubic inch Rocket V8 under the hood, drivers knew the kind of reliable power they were getting as The Rocket V8 had graced the NASCAR Victory lanes a whopping 36 times in just the prior 3 years. With 202 horse power, 4 barrel carburetor, 8.5:1 compression and light weight you had the performance of a Cadillac at Oldsmobile pricing. Matted to a positive-shifting four speed Hydra-Matic transmission the Super 88 was the precursor to the factory muscle cars a decade later. Motor Trend magazine in 1955 described that year’s Super 88 as ‘Olds accelerates with the best and stops just as well as it accelerates.’ With ‘ excellent road feel thru power steering makes correction easy and power available at speeds over 50 mph makes you master of just about any situation. New suspension components this year included direct-acting shock absorbers mounted vertically within springs resulting in smoother ride and no front end vibration or front end oscillation. This Oldsmobile Super 88 had a freshening up 23 years ago with new paint and seats reupholstered with the rest being all original with just only 55,380 original miles. Runs and drives as it should. Owning a piece of history in this kind of condition is a walk, I mean drive, down memory lane to the way things were. The year of Mickey Mantle, Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clock and the very first McDonalds along with the opening of Disney Land, you’re gunna rock, rock rock, ‘till broad day light in the this beautiful Super 88 – why not make it a date.
