For sale at Gateway Classic Cars in our Houston showroom one crazy-well-built 1968 Chevrolet Camaro. Based on the legendary Gen 1 Camaro platform, this car bears a great deal of resemblance to what it left the manufacturing line as, cosmetically; but below the skin is one brawling beast. Given an extra-deep bath of a deliberately-unobtrusive shade of metallic blue paint in 2009, this Camaro almost has "sleeper" written on it. The clean lines of the '68 Camaro remain, and all of its panels are original; but the 3" custom cowl hood might clue a casual onlooker to the fact that it's "not so stock" under there. Inside, it looks pretty much like a restored 1968 Camaro; which, given it's King Kong drivetrain, may come as a bit of a surprise...no extra bells and whistles, just the basics, except for the Camaro RS gauge cluster in the console, the controls for the Vintage Air HVAC, the retro-mod AM/FM/Cassette digital radio, and the wood rimmed Grant steering wheel. If you never heard it start, you'd think it's "just" a '68 Camaro. However, when the ignition key is turned to the right, its GM Performance Parts ZZ427 crate motor will change your perception from "nice car", to "oh my goodness" in a fraction of a second. When this legendary displacement aluminum-headed Rat motor comes to life, the faint of heart will run for the hills (as will any potential competitors). When the mighty 7.4L V8's ignition switched gets turned to the "on" position, one can hear, and nearly visualize the fuel being gulped out of the custom fuel cell out back through the massive fuel lines that lead to its big Holley double-pumper. Once that key gets all of the way to the "start" position, look out: its dual trunk-mounted Optima batteries unleash their current to the MSD Digital 6 ignition controller sends out huge lightning flashes of spark through to the MSD distributor, and then to the spark plugs, which then ignite the air/fuel mix to achieve a staccato burst of explosions inside those massive cylinders. The coated Hooker Super Comp headers will always look good while they evacuate the spent hydrocarbons and air through the custom dual exhaust system, and the sound they help produce is awe-inspiring indeed. Keeping that mill properly cooled is a massive aluminum radiator and thermostatically controlled electric fans. A polished serpentine belt drive system keeps the rest of the driven accessories operating as they should. The big 427 mates up with a TCI-built GM TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, and they work together to spin the 3.42:1 ratio ring and pinion gear-set in the Moser Engineering-enhanced GM 12-bolt rear end. If you're worried that all of that oomph is going to twist that uni-body into a pretzel, don't - the sub-frame has fully-welded-in connectors going all of the way to the rear; so this baby's built to take what the Rat dishes out! If you worry about "old car brakes", and hauling this monster down from triple digit 1/4 mile speeds, then stop. Literally - stop worrying, because this car STOPS - it has a new Wilwood master cylinder, and Wilwood calipers and rotors at all four corners. Combine the braking power with the grip of its 4 radial tires on the pavement (including a set of Mickey Thompson Street ET drag radials at the rear), you'll soon lose your fear of squeezing the binders down tight. Additional enhancements to this 1968 Chevrolet Camaro for sale include true braided steel hoses for the HVAC and fuel system (real AN Fittings, no sleeve nonsense), and some cool Billet Specialties wheels. Options on this Camaro include Air Conditioning by Vintage Air, the aforementioned Billet Specialties aluminum wheels, AM/FM/Cassette digital head unit, Radial Tires, Seat belts, and Vinyl Interior. This is one 1968 Camaro that you'll want to take out for more than just the occasional cruise to the car meets - it's too nice to save for just special occasions!
