Matted to a positive-shifting four speed Hydra-Matic transmission the Super 88 was the precursor to the factory muscle cars a decade later. Motor Trend magazine in 1955 described that year’s Super 88 as ‘Olds accelerates with the best and stops just as well as it accelerates.’ With ‘ excellent road feel thru power steering makes correction easy and power available at speeds over 50 mph makes you master of just about any situation. New suspension components this year included direct-acting shock absorbers mounted vertically within springs resulting in smoother ride and no front end vibration or front end oscillation.
